Opening of Parco dei Melograni (Pomegranate park)

A Foundation-led project, in collaboration with

The Park officially opened on June 24, 2023.

Activities organized in collaboration with local associations highlighted the potential of the Park’s spaces: community gardens, nature play areas, the amphitheater, and the woodland rest area. The day included workshops for children, planting activities, sports demonstrations, folk dance sessions, refreshments, and a concert in the amphitheater.

In line with the approach of temporary urbanism, the opening marked the first step in testing how the space could be used, showing local stakeholders how the Park can respond to their needs.

The name Parco dei Melograni (Pomegranade park) refers to a local legend linking the name of the town, Varano de’ Melegari, to the pomegranate fruit. According to the story, the first pomegranate tree arrived through a monk and was later cultivated in the garden of a noble family, who considered it a symbol of fertility and good fortune. Over time, pomegranate trees became widespread, shaping the identity of the area—still reflected today in the town’s coat of arms.

The Park will continue to grow through the contribution of the community: each of us, like a pomegranate seed, is both individual and inseparable from the whole.
